I Wasn’t Expecting That!

They said the dog is man’s best friend but they clearly never met Love Bird. This adorable chicken has so much love for his human pal and isn’t afraid to show it. The Brumley family in Springville Calif. posted an online video of their 6-year-old boy Mason and his chicken, who he has raised since she was a little chick. Mason and Love Bird are best friends.

It’s so beautiful to see unlikely friendships between humans and animals. Mason met the chick when she was hatched as part of a project in Mason’s nursery school class, and the pair has been inseparable ever since. She even greets him with a hug when he comes home from school. But after he got a haircut, the family wondered how the chicken would respond. Mason’s mother, Gretchen Brumley, has posted a heartwarming video of these lifelong pals, showing how Love Bird recently reacted to Mason’s new haircut.

Does Mason pass the test?

Pulling out their camera phone, they decided to capture the moment and see what happened. The video, appropriately titled, “Is it really you?” features Mason putting out his arms looking for a hug from his favorite pal. Love Bird does a little inspection. At first, she’s unsure. Who is this little boy with short hair and where is my floppy-haired best bud? She pecks around him hesitantly as he patiently waits for her to recognize him. Does Mason pass the test? We won’t ruin it for you, but just watch the video.

But then he opens his arms and smiles and she leans into his embrace, and they stand there, encompassed by the sweetest and most innocent form of love we’ve ever seen.

Love Bird even wakes Mason up every morning and gives him a big hug when he comes home from school.
