It’s tough when you lose your best friends. It’s extra tough when you lose them within 3 weeks of each other. James Xuereb was heartbroken after he and his family lost their two dogs, Lucy and Nemo. That’s the tragedy through which James Xuereb had to suffer this past summer, and dog lovers everywhere feel his pain. He had been mourning the deaths of the dogs, who passed due to congestive heart failure and old age, for many weeks.

He loved his two dogs. It was extremely difficult on the grieving dog lover. So, when his birthday rolled around, his wife Wanda and his daughter Jaleen knew they needed to do something special. Xuereb’s daughter caught the touching moment on camera in which his family gave him a birthday card with a message. An emotional James could barely get through the card. Jaleen read the card aloud for the camera when James was too emotional to continue. It said: “Hi, my name is Lumo. I am a boy Bichon. No, I am not Nemo, nor could I ever be Lucy. My mommy brought me to bring some happiness back into your life. So, as we walk on this journey of life together, may we create our own wonderful memories and reclaim the beautiful memories you had with Nemo and Lucy. Love, Lumo.”

A heartwarming moment!

After reading the sweet sentiment, Xuereb broke down in tears of joy. That’s when his wife, Wanda and daughter, Jaleen decided to surprise him with a puppy in order to lift his spirits. “Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect. The loss of our two dogs was devastating for him and we weren’t entirely sure if he was ready or not.” The Bichon puppy is named Lumo, a combination of the names Lucy and Nemo. Wanda told that she knew her husband would cry at the surprise but had no idea he’d get so emotional. We hope this family makes a mountain of wonderful memories together! “We kept this a secret a really long time,” Wanda said. “We were really anxious. I can’t explain it.”

But thanks to Lumo, James can finally talk about Lucy and Nemo and smile.
