Daya’s life, like those of many dogs, was thrown into disarray when Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico last September. She’d gotten separated from her family and, days passed, weeks and even months without the owners having news of the lost dog. Puerto Rico was absolutely slammed by one hurricane after another last year, and millions of lives were utterly destroyed in the process. The island is only now getting back power in some locations, and people just don’t have time to help care for pets that were abandoned and lost during the storms.
Certainly, Daya’s family never thought they would ever see their fur baby again. They were forced to move to Massachusettes following the storm. They had to leave little Daya behind when they could not locate her in time. It seemed like she would be lost forever… It was only recently, though, that they found out Daya was still alive. When the family found out that their precious fur baby was safe, they were over the moon. She was being flown to the mainland and driven to meet them at Second Chance Animal Services, near their new home. Luckily, some organizations have come on board to help with all those lost dogs. Much like the one that helped Daya.
She was absolutely ecstatic!
The happy reunion was made possible by Puerto Rico Animal Unite and the St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, who arranged the transport needed to get Daya, and many dogs like her, back home where they belong. Daya, of course, had no idea who would be awaiting her. Daya, like any dog in an unfamiliar situation, was very scared. “She was really shy,” Diane Tillotson, marketing manager for the shelter said. But then Daya recognized a familiar scent, and that all changed. Watch the video, the moment the nervous little dog realized it was her family, she was absolutely ecstatic!
