For the past two weeks, a stray dog named Buboy has sat outside the faculty office at Mabalacat City College in Pampanga, Philippines. The pup scrapes at the door, hoping his favorite person will come out and give him some food or a scratch behind the ear. The sight of the mottled dog waiting hopefully is breaking the hearts of the school’s staff and students — because they know his dad isn’t coming back. Buboy had been a stray dog in Manila four years earlier, but a professor had connected with him, taking him under his wing. Buboy would turn up at the campus every day and lie at the feet of the teacher, ever faithful. The professor rewarded the dog’s loyalty by caring for him, providing him with food and friendship. But the Professor Carmelito Marcelo, who has taken care of Buboy, for the last four years, passed away from a stroke after a few weeks’ stay in the hospital.

According to Kristina Demafelix, Marcelo’s colleague, the dog followed the professor everywhere. Buboy would greet the professor at the gate in the morning, trailing after him from class to class. They ate lunch together in the faculty office, and at the end of the day, the dog would see the teacher off at the gate. Even when Marcelo didn’t have classes, he would visit his pup. But now it was clear Buboy was confused when his master didn’t come to the university, and the poor pooch couldn’t express his feeling and all the pain, as he was completely unaware of the tragedy that had struck. Demafelix first noticed the dog hanging around the faculty office while the professor was in the hospital. But when Buboy continued to wait, Demafelix decided to help the stressed animal find closure.

Demafelix realized that he had to know why the professor had stopped coming to take classes, so she took the decision to take him to Marcelo’s funeral to help him understand that the professor would not be coming back and to say a final goodbye to his beloved friend. Demafelix would lift up the dog to see Marcelo, and he would stare at the coffin, refusing to put his legs down and not wanting to leave. Then he sat patiently beside the coffin when he realized his master was lying there. When Marcelo’s coffin was taken away, Demafelix made a promise to look out for Buboy, and she would make sure he could remain at the school. He is back at school, and although he’s not likely to forget Marcelo soon, Buboy is sure to feel comfort in the care and compassion of the students and teachers.
