A mistreated pooch whose fur was so badly matted into ‘dreadlocks’ has been given a new lease of life after being rescued. The dog’s owner left the poor dog to fend for itself in the dirt for several months and the animal’s fur grew so long it tripped over his matted fur when he tried to walk. The hairy hound was spotted by locals in the city of Łodz, Poland, and alerted the animal control department of the local police, according to local reports. The dog was brought under the care of a city animal centre while police identified its owner.

Cops went to arrest the man, however Lukasz Berlinski, head of animal control, said: “Nobody would open the door to us, but from the inside we could hear the dog barking.” Cops and firefighters entered the property and found the mistreated dog. They took him to the shelter and shaved off 4kg of filthy fur, nearly half its bodyweight. Animal shelter worker Marta Olesinska said: “We got a dog that couldn’t move or even go to the toilet. He had been neglected for a very long time living in high temperatures and incredible dirt. And the owner ignored the fact that the fur was making his life more and more difficult.”

The dreadlocks had to be carefully snipped away so that the dog wouldn’t be caused any more pain, then he was shaved to get rid of any further matting. After that he had a bath to remove all the dirt and fleas resting on his skin. Staff at the shelter have now named him Farciarz, meaning ‘lucky’. Farciarz had no serious health problems. Olesinska confirmed: “The investigation against the owner is underway. Apparently, the man has an alcohol problem.” Now staff at the shelter have posted a message on social media saying: “Farciarz greets you. Today, she feels much better, although she is still sleeping because of all the emotions and stress of yesterday.” Watch the video and see how he looks today! Hope he is loved forever.
