An incredible feat of strength! (Video)

The bond between parent and child is one of the strongest connections in nature, and it’s what makes parents instinctively put their children first. We will do almost anything to protect our babies, and elephant-parents are no exception. In this video, a mother elephant desperately tries to pull her baby from a mud-filled well. She refuses to leave the calf’s side, digging into the mud to try and free her baby. She becomes so distraught, though, that she accidentally pushes more mud into the embankment, trapping the calf.

The mother elephant did everything she could think of in order to dig herself closer to her calf. She used her feet, her trunk, and everything in between. However, in a desperate attempt to get her baby out, she actually pushed more dirt and mud into the hole to trap the calf even more. She actually made the situation much worse. Bystanders couldn’t risk interfering because they were worried the mama elephant would becoming defensive and potentially trample them.

A desperate attempt!

Finally, in a desperate attempt to help the mother elephant, people living nearby from the Chatra district in India used a cart of bananas to lure the anxious elephant away just long enough for them to dig away some of the ground trapping the calf. “The plan worked and we used the time remove the heap of sand deposited near the well that was making it difficult for her to rescue the baby,” said Jitendra Tiwari, who filmed the drama and helped with the rescue. After the excess soil was moved, the mother was able to tightly wrap her trunk around the baby’s body and lift her safely out of the hole. Despite the traumatic experience, the pair walked away together and obviously relieved to be reunited. It’s an amazing thing to see when that parental instinct comes shining through in a dire situation. Watch the video of her rescue attempts… the tenacity and determination of a mother is an incredible thing!
