The video shows two women attempting to bring the mare to its feet.Shirley Wilson, who filmed the incident, said she was ‘so very sad’ to witness the cruelty unfold right in front of the popular thoroughfare outside the Cardiff city centre arena. In some other photographs, a horse-drawn carriage can be seen next to where the animal fell. According to the police, the exhausted mare collapsed as a result of being out in the heat for ‘hours’. Sandra Kvaerneng Stolp – from Swansea-based animal rescue centre Whispering Willows Sanctuary – was called out to collect the exhausted and pregnant animal.
Exhausted and pregnant
She said: “We were called by the police. A horse had been down on Westgate Street for a couple of hours. It had collapsed on the road. We did what we could and we got her up and she’s now in the back. She’s munching on her hay, it was the hay that got her in the box. We don’t know how old she is. We’re now going to go home and call the vet out.” South Wales Police confirms that two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. Watch the video, things are now much better for this pretty mare who needed a lot of help.
This incident happened on the hottest day of this year in Wales.
She is now out of danger. The vets believe her pregnancy would have increased the severity of this discomfort.
